The Reality of 1000 true fans (or, why I would never give up my day job for blogging.)

More power to all those folks who're trying to earn a living as bloggers (typically, they are blogging about blogging, lol). I dumped adsense from my main blog a long time ago because I realized how futile it is to chase traffic and 1% click-throughs. I'd rather just post what's on my mind than think about my 'audience'. According to feedburner, I have 40 some-odd 'fans', and google analytics puts the number closer to 200 regular repeat visitors, but afaict there are 4 or 5 people who really read all my posts. [c'mon, lurkers, show us some love with a comment or two] With 70 real hits a day, 1% click-through rate and 10 cents a click, adsense doesn't even buy me my coffee.

All that said, some sure-fire hits for drawing traffic:

  1. APPLE SUX
  2. Controversial posturing
  3. ???
  4. Did I mention APPLE SUX?

One real conclusion that can be drawn from the 1000 true fan debate is that whatever you decide to do, be sure you're passionate about it. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a struggling artist who doesn't have a real passion for their work.

great stuff keep up posting. especially more "apple sux" plz ;)
I use RSS to follow your blog but I prefer to read stuff in the original blog theme rather than reading them in a blog reader. So I have my own rss reader script that redirects me to updated blogs.
As a suggestion if you could make the posts more distinct from each other that would be easier to follow. e.g. a different color for the title link than other links on that post or line or something between them.

Feedburner lies

I like your blog, and visit once in a while, but don't subscribe except via a bookmark, so don't trust feedburner. I've never "gotten" why anybody uses it.

For your amusement, you should check out the shameless plea for comments that I put up on my own blog, like you, just to see who's out there. (It only appears after 30 seconds, on the assumption that it's only relevant if you are actually reading a posting.)

feedburner

you've never gotten why people use feedburner? or why they use feedburner stats? or why they use rss?

I do 90% of my web browsing with google reader and rss feeds. Feedburner is pretty good at listing regular subscribers but misses the other 50% of the audience that comes from direct hits or google. Still, I think FB stats can be misleading, because they may only indicate that a subscriber had their reader open- they may not have actually read my feed.

One thing I do like about FB is that it readily records odd uses of your xml feed, such as the BC Bloggers aggregator.
